How to use

The Mycoplasma pneumoniae, DNA PCR test is used as an aid in diagnosing infection caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae. This nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), performed by real-time PCR, detects organism-specific DNA in respiratory specimens and in cerebrospinal fluid when clinical evaluation raises concern for central nervous system involvement. Use of Mycoplasma pneumoniae PCR complements clinical assessment and other laboratory data by directly identifying the pathogen’s genetic material in the specimen tested.

Limitations

This assay uses real-time PCR to amplify and detect Mycoplasma pneumoniae DNA in a qualitative format. Detection of target DNA in a respiratory specimen or cerebrospinal fluid supports the presence of the organism’s genetic material in that sample type and should be interpreted alongside clinical findings and other laboratory results. A positive result indicates that M. pneumoniae DNA is present in the specimen tested. A negative result does not rule out infection if the pathogen is below the assay’s limit of detection or if the specimen type, timing, or collection quality is suboptimal. Interpretation is dependent on the clinical context and the source of the specimen submitted.
