How to use
Cholinesterase, Serum—also known as plasma cholinesterase, pseudocholinesterase, or butyrylcholinesterase—assesses suppression of cholinesterase activity due to organophosphate compounds and aids the evaluation of suspected acute or chronic cholinesterase inhibitor poisoning. The test also supports identification of inherited pseudocholinesterase deficiency, a condition associated with extended apnea and paralysis after administration of succinylcholine.
Limitations
Acetylcholinesterase is localized in erythrocytes and neural tissues and rapidly hydrolyzes acetylcholine to terminate cholinergic neurotransmission; reduced activity permits acetylcholine accumulation, leading to cholinergic overstimulation. Pseudocholinesterase (butyrylcholinesterase) is present in serum and multiple tissues and contributes to the hydrolysis and metabolism of certain toxins and drugs, including succinylcholine. Organophosphate insecticides act as cholinesterase inhibitors and reduce measured serum activity.
